Caution! Enjoy In Moderation
By Bonita Anderson
Picking berries is one of my favorite activities. Wild strawberries are fun to look for. They can be found in the hay field, along country roads or in the woods around my place. My grandmother and I would actually pack a lunch to take with us whenever we would go berry picking as we generally made a full day of it. At the end of a good picking day we would have upwards of a dozen quarts of those tiny, bright, red treasures. They would be turned into jelly, jam, sauce and of course, strawberry short cake.
I still make the usual things out of berries along with an adult version. I have to label them with a warning and I keep them out of the reach of children. I call them booze berries, and they are tasty, but for adults only.
I make sure the berries are clean before putting them in a jar. I use any kind of jar as these are not processed. I prepare a syrup of 2-parts sugar and 1-part water and boil it for 8 minutes. When that is cool I measure equal parts of the cooled syrup and liquor. Mix it up and pour it over the berries in the jar, making sure the berries are completely covered.

These berries are delicious served over ice cream or my favorite short cake. I make a baking powder biscuit, cut it in half and spoon on berries. Top it with real whipped cream, more berries, a drizzle of hot fudge sauce and another dollop of whipped cream. I think I will have that tonight as the berries are ready.
The kind of liquor I use depends on the berry I put in the jar. I use rum, brandy, vodka or tequila with strawberries. The berries in tequila make a mean margarita. Remember to enjoy in moderation.
